Pain points for code editors

2024-11-27T00:57:17.966Z

I have been trying out Zed and Cursor as editors. Major pain points -- Zed: only support copilot / supermaven for inline completions; ideally there should be a native completion provider, major downgrade from Cursor Tab. Cursor: (same problem as vscode), (1) the Vim integration bad, at Zed there are convenient commands like `cd` that I miss a lot, (2) battery usage, it's difficult to carry Cursor at school as it drains my batter pretty quickly and there's no easy way to connect my laptop to a charger.

The Mind Illuminated

Directing attention onto the sensations of my nostrils is very hard when I have rhinitis and literally can't feel anything

LLMs

2024-11-19T12:13:32.948Z

LLMs have gotten extremely good at generating code. It probably generates >30% of the code I write (been writing Rust lately though so expect that number to go down). I don't think they are effective for generating prose. I wouldn't use it until we get personal models fine-tuned over all the writing we produced and are able to generate content in my voice/style. However, I find the act of prompting itself to be extremely useful, especially when thinking through complex problems and getting over writer's block. It forces me to elucidate my problems into words. Simply clearly stating a problem is extremely beneficial; perhaps more important than the output of the language model sometimes.

Planning works, actually

I feel like contemporary "productivity"/grind culture(especially those you see on twitter) overemphasize the importance of execution & the process of doing stuff. Now I feel like I'm capable of executing any given task relatively well; what is more important is the ability to make decisions & have plans that are thought through. P.S. highly recommend Better Call Saul episode "Plan & Execution"

I digress

If I were to be tested on a web agent benchmark (e.g. WebShop), I posit I'd perform much worse compared to the average LMM. Highly confident that O1 with tool use would absolutely destroy me.

.. sure, cryptographic ones are useful. What about human ones? Is it possible to tell if someone's "condensed intuition" is accurate

Addicted to analytics

Sometimes the compulsion to check analytics (site viewcounts, daily active users, posthog product analytics...) can be so addicting that it prevents me from being productive.

This is fun
